What is Life Time Healthy Living?

Life Time offers weekly onsite wellness programs to members and non-members led by a Life Time health coach. These programs can vary in length and focus, but primarily address diet and exercise. Each session is structured similarly to a college-style lecture course with slides, participant participation, and weekly assignments.

About the Project

Design was tasked with "digitizing" Healthy Living wellness programs. We were given 4 months to understand, concept, and launch a mobile MVP experience for over 2,000 beta customers.

Guiding questions:

  • How could we scale Healthy Living in-person experiences in a digital medium?
  • Could we reach more people with a digital learning and habit-building experience?
  • Would this experience better position Life Time as a trusted brand in the health and wellness sector?

A full day of observation

I shadowed a Life Time health coach as she taught a Healthy Living session. The participants were in week 8 of their program. I observed and took notes of how the program was run.

Defining the Vision

After aligning with the business stakeholders, we were able to define the MVP goals.

Primary goals...

  • Make the existing Healthy Living content the focus – PDF and videos
  • Create a path for participants to schedule calls with a health coach
  • Allow participants to set goals and track progress
  • Launch beta version in August 2016 (>5 months from idea to launch)

Exploration

My product team and I whiteboarded potential workflows, and leveraged existing Life Time mobile app patterns to keep the experience familiar.

Wireframes

I created initial wireframes and workflows for our team to align. Functionality focused on core user needs uncovered during observations:

  • Allowing content to be referenced and downloaded at any time
  • Goal setting
  • Retroactive goal tracking

Applying the UI

As a more junior designer, I worked closely with a senior designer to design UI using existing mobile app patterns, mapped to the wireframes above. This is a small collection of the 100+ screens we handed off for development.

Outcome

This project was launched as a beta experience on time (Aug 2016) to over 2,000 beta users. Initial feedback was positive for the app experiences ease of use. However, the beta was shut down after one month due to logistical oversight (inability to scale coaching resources and content for mobile consumption) and lack of long-term business funding needed to bring this experience to its potential.

Focus was instead narrowed to support hiring more health coaches, and increasing effectiveness of in-person wellness programs.

Retrospective
Given the quick turnaround time and exploratory nature of this project, I learned so much. I learned how to move quickly with limited resources and significant constraints. I learned about behavior change and the psychology behind habit-building. I learned how design can create longer-term vision to influence stakeholders to think differently about initial project assumptions.
